Hey gang,
So went opening night to see this film and to be honest I had my doubts from the get go. The Musketeer films have had a tendency to be really entertaining and worth while to complete crap and just a waste of life.
The Disney version of the film, Sutherland Sheen Platt and O'Donnell, had just about everything. The action was good, the on screen chemistry worked well, and Chris O'Donnell was not someone you wished to choke the life from for ruining a classic tale. All in all, the film worked and that was just good enough for Disney.
Fast forward to The Musketeer. This movie is crap from the get go. Justin Chambers is a hack who is wired up, doing Matrix style kung fu on the side of a tower, while making Athos, Porthos and Aramis look like complete clods. The film pretty much centers around Chambers, hence the MUSKETEER instead of the MUSKETEERS. The CIG is bad, the action ill paced, and the movie a complete waste of time.
So, having these two movies to judge from, one can see where my doubts originated from. The Musketeers is a well paced action film that goes a little over the top but not enough to where you want your money back. The film chemistry of the orginal three, Athos Porthos and Aramis, is well played out by Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson and newcomer Luke Evans. Add to the mix a young Logan Lerman as D'Artagnan and you have a well paced film that's not afraid to make fun of itself while keeping you on the edge of your seat with anticipation of a well timed ending. Also Christoph Waltz shines once again as the bad guy and Mads Mikkelsen makes a splash as the new Rochefort. All in all the film is a success and something that keeps your attention throughout the duration of the film and leaves you actually wanting to see the sequel. All in all a solid three star film and a good recommendation to friends wanting a date night film.
Well, there you have it.
J.
