Saw this one a couple of days ago. Yet another "documentary" style horror flick about possession. This is just another in a very long line of films that follow a very similar formula. The film usually starts out with skeptics seeking the truth or some kind of helpless victim wanting to explore the unknown and by the end of the film they get a dose of truth they never wanted.
But there are a few small twists and turns in this film that kind of sets it apart but never really does, if that makes sense. The film is a lot more action packed than others. Usually these films spend about forty five minutes laying out the scene when in reality it only takes about ten or fifteen minutes. These scenes are filled with useless shots of an Er of endless information that is either A not important or B straight filler. By the time the action does take place, most people have either started making out or changed the channel entirely. Apartment 143 is different because the action is pretty fluid through out the film. There are nice little scares, mixed with funny trick shots that offer little jumps now and then but all in all; it's pretty standard.
The actors in this film are a tad better than most of those who usually are staple points in film like this. The story line is somewhat different in the fact that they try and say the victim is projecting this herself through some kind of trauma sustained at the hands of her father, but then there is that last little twist. All in all, a standard film in what is quickly becoming a new genre within the horror film industry. I would like to say it won't last, but given the flow of mainstream crap, I'm pretty sure it will be around for a while.
Just my thoughts
J.
