Shutter Island and Session 9

Ok,
So the wife and I just got finished watching Shutter Island, directed by Martin Scorsese, and I have to say over all the movie was entertaining, but had no lasting effect on my well being.

The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Kingsly, and Mark Ruffalo and is filled with visually stunning scenes and mind bending plot twists that offer a stimulating movie going experience, however the plot is slow moving and does not keep pace with the flow of the action that the director offers to keep audiences entertained. The acting of the movie's stars and the secondary stars keep up with the psychological tone but the flow of the movie reveals the plot rather early and the rest of the two hour movie is just kind of filler to the big reveal that is not nearly as impressive that Martin Scorsese intends it to be.

Now if this disappoints you, then fear not because I have a movie recommendation that should give you the taste of psychological thriller that you might have been looking for when renting Shutter Island. Session 9, 2001, is directed by Brad Anderson, is about the same tone as Shutter Island and even has a similar plot but gets you there a lot faster and leaves you disturbed. The movie is not main stream, but the movie is still very creative with use of angles and shadow work as well as voice overs and monologues that chill to the bone.

So Shutter Island, a solid three star flick, Session 9 a solid four and a half stars.
