Now when most people say B movie it's a cut down. It's saying that a film isn't good enough to be considered a mainstream film or a blockbuster. This pitfall can happen because of low budget, wrong production company, bad cast, whatever the case may be the the B movie is viewed as "lesser" than other films and can be an embarrassment to an actors resume. However in my opinion this is not always the case.
To me a b movie is designed to be exactly what it is. A B movie is a forgettable film that is entirely entertaining for the moment and only for that moment. It is not a movie you buy, simply a movie you run into while channel surfing and you find that you can't tear yourself away from it. B movies are not impacts on the mainstream film front but they can be impacts to a personal collection that allows you to be brave enough to step off the beaten track but not obscure enough to be roaming the foreign film is isle at Blockbuster.
So here it is folks my top five B movie actors list.
But first a definition. What is a B movie actor? Well a B movie actor is 9 times out of 10 a former blockbuster actor who has to settle for a paycheck rather than a serious plot line. Now these little slips are never forever but if they last too long when the actor picks up another block buster they have to be labeled with the "comeback" syndrome. Another example of the B movie actor is the actor who always pays his homage by maintaining himself as a B movie actor while stealing a scene or two from a blockbuster movie.
Now here we go:
5: Tom Sizemore:
Now in all honestly you might see this actor more in the news than in movies, but despite his self destructive trends, Tom Sizemore never fails to make is presence known in any of his films. His firm features matched by his slum slang talk and his piercing stare, Tom is often stereotyped as a thug or a strong man but he has his softer sides too. My favorite film with him has to be The Florentine in which he plays a man who returns home to right some of the wrongs he has done in his past. In this Tom steps away from his power house stereotype and maintains the image of a softer man just looking to do the right thing.
4: Michael Madsen:
No matter what movie this actor is in, I watch it, if only to see how he reacts and how he pushes the envelope with his method driven acting. Michael Madsen is clearly the other type of B movie actor who maintains his presence in the B movie world while silently stealing scenes from big budget films with his no holds bar approach to acting. My favorite film with the big man is HellRide, directed by Larry Bishop, where Madsen plays Jimmy The Gent. A classic pulp fiction biker tale, Madsen brings Hellride to a new truth as he stylistically moves from scene to scene, claiming the film as his own.
3: Sylvester Stallone:
Now this is an actor who does the yo yo from B movie stardom to block buster anxiety. Stallone is often categorized as a piss poor actor with a bad accent, the droopy eye and too much botox. Sadly this is just not true. Stallone is a talented writer, director, and actor, who has managed to make such bad movies like Rhinestone with Dolly Parton, to award winning films like Rocky. So Stallone is my all around guy and I just can't help but watch whatever he puts out. My favorite movie is the new Rocky Balboa. Stallone really makes an attempt to push a film to fans by filling it with little tidbits that make the film truly golden to a true lover the franchise.
2: Mickey Rourke:
Yeah he makes two lists, but I do have a different movie with him in mind. Angel Heart is such a classic B movie with its twists and turns and true horror out come, how could any lover of film pass it by?
1: Steve Buscemi:
With his off the wall looks and character driven acting methods, it's hard to see why Steve Buscemi isn't in the front of every film he's ever made. But in honesty I feel that is the way he prefers it. From Mr. Pink, to Donny, to Rockhound, each Buscemi character is unique and stylish in a manner that only Steve can put on himself. My favorite movie has to be The Big Lebowski. Donny is such the classic blunderer who travels from one scene to the other, stepping on conversations while being the but of the joke. His life and his death are a fundamental element to the dude and a driving point that the audience grieves for.
Just my thoughts.
