Last night I went to see True Grit and I am glad to say the Coen Brothers have done it again. True Grit is a masterful tale of old west life and love or hate it you have to give the Coen Brothers their props. Everything from the way the film is show to how the characters speak is a key the Coen brothers use to propel this story from one point in time to another. Actors like Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Barry Pepper, all dedicate themselves to their craft to highlight each and every scene they partake in to make the film complete. From beginning to end True Grit continues to surprise, from comedy, suspense, to drama the Coen Brothers deliver all.
But the real true gift of the Coen brothers is not to tell the story of an instance or a single moment but to tell the story of a passage of time, from one point of history to another. Examples of this can be seen in Oh Brother Where Art Thou, Miller's Crossing, even the Big Lebowski. The Coen's masterful touch is the ability to combine cinematography and well written plot to explore the dying of one age and the birth or another. True Grit is no different and while most will protest that John Wayne isn't in it or it's not the same movie, I say celebrate the difference and treat this film as a completely new film and I promise you will not be sorry. True Grit is Oscar worthy and I can honestly say I look forward to seeing this film again, truly a TEN STAR film.
