Today the world of film was rocked by the tragic death of Pete Postlethwaite after his long battle with cancer. In this time of grief I can't help but wonder if Hollywood can recover from such huge losses as this. In the last two years Hollywood has lost such greats as Heath ledger, Dennis Hopper, David Carradine, James Whitmore, and John Hughes and I can't help but wonder if the gap left by these greats can be filled with the actors/directors of this new generation. For instance is it possible that Robert Townsend could ever fill the shoes of Dennis Hopper or even Heath Ledger? What about those greats that sadly will soon leave us? Greats such as Peter O'Toole, Michael Caine and Clint Eastwood have spent their lives providing people with the top level of entertainment, but what happens when their passage leaves such a huge hole in Hollywood?
Fear not movie goers I have faith in the actors and directors of our generation. For example, Ben Affleck has really shown his ability in The Town. This hard hitting drama about South Boston and the bank robbing tradition brings home powerful performances and is able to captivate audiences for the duration of the film. Affleck not only directed this film, but also is the male lead, and is backed up by up and comer Jeremy Renner; who made his big splash with last years powerhouse Hurt Locker. With such films as The Town and other films such as Tron Legacy and True Grit Hollywood will survive and those greats who have passed will be honored by later generations who will honor them with their performances.
Just my thoughts.
