Prometheus

Ridley Scott strikes gold again. I just walked out of Prometheus and I am very satisfied with the whole movie experience. The film is a prequel to the Alien film that Scott directed back in the early 1980s. Through a mastery of imagery and story, Scott is not only able to recapture the same fever and emotion that the first film holds, but is also able to capture a new audience.

The film is set in the near future and stars a group of scientists who strive to answer the questions of creation through a map they find in ancient ruins. The film stars Noomi Repace as the lead scientist Shaw, Michael Fassbender as the android David, and Charlize Theron as Meridith Vickers. The plot of the film is not what one would normally expect from a prequel, rather a more in depth revelation of the origin of Alisn species and an explanation into our own creation.

So, those of you who are expecting Colonial Marines, face huggers, and a queen Alien, this is not the film for you. Scott takes a back step and creates a film that not only is visually stunning, like Avatar, but also creates something that is mentally stimulating with plot twists and turns that both terrify and excite. The cast provides powerhouse performances that pay homage to the past cast, but also shines within its own manner. Theron shines as the cold corporate executive as Repace hails as the dreamer reaching to the skies for answers. Michael Fassbender though, is definitely the star that shines brightest. His character David is an android who both questions humanity and their imperfections, but also hails to admire the superior species that brought humanity to life. Through the entire film his mannerisms, his actions, even his dialogue is executed with such perfection it is hard to see where the android ends and where the human begins.

If you go and see anything this weekend, go and see Prometheus. It's worth the time, worth the money, and gives you something to walk away with as you question the possibility of a sequel in our future.

Just my thoughts
J.
