Okay folks I know it's been a while since I posted and lord knows I've seen lots and lots of films so I thought it was about time to pick up the slack and a little something something about the recent films I've seen.
The Town:
Co-written and directed by Ben Affleck, The Town is a powerful reminder at the performance ability of an often misjudged and stereotyped actor. Ben Affleck shines in this action thriller about South Boston and the plague of bank robberies. The film highlights the passage of sin from father to son and really brings crime down to a personal level without boring the audience with long monologues about how crime doesn't pay. Jeremy Renner, up for best supporting actor, is also a pleasant surprise in this film as he portrays Affleck's partner in crime and a distant family member who puts Affleck up for one last job. This film is very much worth the watch and a solid four stars to those who are counting.
Black Swan:
Now before seeing this movie I heard several people state that this film was such a let down, but honestly now I realize they are just pissed because no one got naked. The Black Swan is a a thriller to remind us of just how disturbing the human mind can be. Filled with honest scares and deep, disturbed violence, the Black Swan never disappoints. Natalie Portman shines as the shy female lead who struggles with her own sexuality and her own desire to stop at nothing to obtain the coveted role of the Black Swan. Mila Kunis also never stops pleasing as the slightly slutty and stunningly sexy new girl who wants to steal that part away. Black Swan is a solid four and a half stars and a real treat for fans of Hannibal and Silence of the Lambs.
The Eagle:
When people think of Channing Tatum they think of those horrible dance films and the cheesy teen romances where he played the bad boy. But in recent films Tatum has struggled to shed off his teen idol status and step into the shoes of a serious actor. The Eagle is proof that his efforts are not in vain. A film about a missing Roman legion the Eagle is a not stop thrill ride that doesn't cheapen the story with true historical tid bits here and there and a startling depiction of the harsh introduction to the dark ages. Jamie Bell is also a stand out in this film as he plays a slave who is forced to venture through his own home land to lead the enemy to a coveted prize of the golden eagle standard. A solid three star movie and something I wouldn't mind watching again.
The Mechanic:
Jason Statham never fails to disappoint in this Charles Bronson remake of a hit man training a young up and comer to take on a corrupt business and get a little payback. This move is a non stop thrill ride with twists and turns that never stop no matter how much you beg. Ben Foster also brings a heavy trigger finger to the film as the long lost son of Statham's mentor and dear friend, played by Donald Sutherland. Filmed in Louisiana the Mechanic is something local film goers can be proud of as it claims a solid four stars on my list.
Drive Angry 3D:
Now I know what you're thinking, just because he was in the film, he's going to give it a good review. Well, damn right I'm gonna give it a good review, it was a damned good movie. Drive Angry was just what I wanted it to be, hot chicks, hot cars, and Nic Cage kicking ass and wasting the bag guy with his personal style and touch. Written by Todd Farmer and directed by the same team that brought you Jason X and My Bloody Valentine, Drive Angry never shorted out on the blood, gore, and violence. Drive Angry is a solid three stars and one film(that I was in) that I will own when it comes out.
